12 May 2018, Saturday –
Last Thursday, as we were cruising north, some serious heat and humidity attacked us in Georgia. Accompanying that heat and humidity were hordes of bugs… of all sizes, shapes, and varieties. Bill and I both, fly swatters in hand, left carnage in our wake. There were dead bodies all over the decks. And plenty had already been given their burial at sea.
With this torture pushing frustration levels and comfort to unpleasant places, we decided it was time to pull into a marina for a few days and the next available marina was Isle of Hope, just south of Savannah. Bill and I had been here last year on our first journey south and had loads of fun. It’s a great town with tons of history and plenty of nightlife too.
Our first night in the marina was devoted to rest and relaxation, with our air conditioning blowing, but after we had rested up, we spent all day and all night sightseeing and exploring in downtown Savannah. It was a Saturday, so there was tons of people and tourists like ourselves around. I had a 20 stop walking tour brochure and I was not afraid to use it. Bill likes to pretend he doesn’t like walking around cities, sightseeing and exploring, but he likes it as much as I do. He just thinks its fun to complain.
After I dragged him through my walking tour and we explored up and down endless streets with pretty old houses and lots and lots of brown signs to read, the day was getting on towards sunset and it was time for a beer and some dinner. The dinner options were in an area of town filled with people on the streets, buskers and live music. After dinner we had no choice but to stick around and enjoy the goings-on. The first time we looked at our watch it was after 1030. We looked at each other and said we should probably start heading home…. Then we went into another bar where the music sounded really good.
Bill said, “Did you notice all the people out on the streets are a lot younger than we are.” We determined the other old people were smarter than us, and had gone some time ago. It ended up midnight by the time we got home!
As is our habit we had had a long day, filled with all manner of adventures, then came home and crashed and burned. We had intended to be underway early the next day, but we didn’t even get out of bed till after nine.
